Issues with Fossil Fuel-Based Yongin National System Semiconductor Industrial Complex

About

Executive summary

By the time the Yongin National Semiconductor Industrial Complex is completed in 2050, it is expected to require about 10GW of additional electricity supply. The government plans to build 3GW of LNG power plants to meet the short-term demand.

As global chip suppliers and consumers move to decarbonize their supply chain, Samsung’s continued reliance on fossil fuel would likely lead to its loss of competitiveness through increased carbon cost and loss of market share.

It is especially important to build renewable energy based Yongin National Semiconductor Industrial Complex because it can reduce the emissions of semiconductor supply chain in Korea, thereby reducing Samsung’s scope 3 emissions as well. More importantly, it will reduce the negative health impacts from LNG power plants to residents near the industrial complex.

The government, along with Gyeonggi province and Samsung, should cooperate closely to make sure that renewable energy based Yongin National Semiconductor Industrial Complex is formed.
