Natsumi Tan
As part of the Japan Steel team, Natsumi Tan analyses industrial and environmental policy around steel manufacturing, consumption and green steel transitions. Her research and analysis contribute to SFOC’s steel decarbonization campaign strategy, alongside implementation initiatives through stakeholder engagement. Before joining SFOC, she was a student advocate at the University of California Students’ Association, leading campaigning for Indigenous and Native American environmental defense in California. As the only Political and Communications Intern at the UK Embassy in Tokyo during Prime Minister Starmer’s visit and snap elections in 2026, she supported the promotion of UK-Japan political and soft power bilateral ties. Past research experiences include the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) and Pacific Forum, where she focused on Indo-Pacific, Singaporean and Japanese security. Driven by her keenness in human rights protection, her dissertation problematized human trafficking in Southeast Asian cyber scam hubs, exploring how a regional human rights regime can be incentivized in ASEAN by leveraging great power competition and converging economic self-interests of Member States. Her motivation at SFOC is to minimize climate change-related human and social impacts by mitigating climate change through steel decarbonization. She holds a BA of International Liberal Studies specializing in International Relations from Waseda University, a Global Study Program Certificate from the University of California, Davis, and was a JASSO Study Abroad Scholar and 23rd International Monetary Fund Macroeconomist Trainee.
