About this event
One year ago, the world's highest court delivered a landmark ruling: states are legally bound to protect the climate system — and financing fossil fuels may violate international law.
On July 23, 2025, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its landmark Advisory Opinion on climate change, following an initiative led by Pacific Island students and the state of Vanuatu. In May 2026, 141 UN member states endorsed the Opinion through a UN General Assembly resolution.
This webinar will explore what these developments mean for governments, public finance institutions, and fossil fuel subsidies. Bringing together legal experts, advocates, and Pacific voices, the discussion will examine emerging accountability mechanisms, ongoing legal cases in Korea and Japan, and how this momentum can help advance fossil fuel phase-out efforts ahead of COP31.
