SFOC at COP28 

Solutions for Our Climate (SFOC) is a Seoul-based independent nonprofit organization that works to accelerate global greenhouse gas emissions reduction and energy transition. SFOC leverages research, litigation, community organizing, and strategic communications to deliver practical climate solutions and build movements for change. 

SFOC experts will be present at this year’s Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC in Dubai. For any interview requests or media inquiries, reach out to Eunji (eunji.kim[at]forourclimate.org).  

Attendees from SFOC will be following COP negotiations, monitoring progress toward the phase-out of fossil fuels and renewable energy growth. We will also be hosting and participating in events and coordinating interviews with media.

What’s important for COP28? 

"This year’s UNFCCC Conference of the Parties is a critical moment to accelerate the global energy transition for a sustainable and just future. As country leaders gather to discuss ways to keep 1.5°C alive, they need to prioritize a fast and equitable transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.  

COP28 will be a testbed for how each country lays out a roadmap for global renewables deployment. Beyond words, we need to ensure that governments will implement policies and dedicate financing to make this change happen. This means promoting a fair power market, investing in necessary infrastructure, and redirecting financing from fossil fuels to renewable energy projects. The real work begins after COP28."

1. Renewables 

SFOC events:  

COP28 is expected to serve as a forum for a discourse on tripling renewable energy capacity globally. This event will discuss how we can achieve this goal through means such as system design, permitting and business cooperation.

The event will seek to discuss concrete actions on how to mobilize both public and private finance to achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement in a socially just manner, under the regulatory framework and public-private partnerships.

Global investors are increasingly recognizing climate change as both risks to industries and economic opportunities. The event aims to (demonstrate how investor engagement can help strengthen competitiveness of Korean companies and the capital market in the era of climate change, and highlight the importance for companies to have constructive engagement with investors by providing credible climate-related information.

Joojin Kim – Chief Executive Officer (he/him) 

Joojin Kim is the founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Solutions for Our Climate (SFOC). He will be leading the SFOC delegation at COP28 and speaking at various events.  

Joojin will be in Dubai for both weeks and is available for interviews on various topics that SFOC covers.  

Sunwoo (Vivian) Lee - Head of International Climate Unit (she/her) 

Sunwoo (Vivian) Lee leads the International Climate unit at SFOC. International Climate unit houses diplomacy and global coordination (overseas partner engagement) teams. She closely follows key discussions in climate diplomacy, and collaborates with other international partners in the energy transition and policy space. 

Sunwoo will be in Dubai for both weeks and is available to discuss topics including, but not limited to: South Korea’s role and responsibility at COP and Asia-regional energy transition, global climate cooperation and coordination. 

Eunbyeol Jo - Head of Renewables Permitting Team (she/her) 

Eunbyeol Jo explores one of the major bottlenecks to the global renewables expansion: permitting. She looks into siting and zoning problems in the offshore wind industry as well as the separation distance regulations that applies to the solar industry in South Korea.  

Eunbyeol will be in Dubai for both weeks and is available to discuss topics including, but not limited to: renewables-related policy needs in Korea, the role of policy and regulations in climate change mitigation, and the current status of renewable energy procurement in Korea.  

Ja Hyun Kim - Policy Analyst at Power Market and Grid Team (she/her) 

Ja Hyun Kim analyzes South Korea’s power market and grid with a specialty in flexibility resources. In her role, she identifies key regulatory and systematic hurdles in the power sector and advocates for a fairer and more flexible power grid.  

Ja Hyun will be in Dubai for week one (Nov. 30 – Dec. 6) and is available to discuss topics including, but not limited to: South Korea’s power sector (e.g., infrastructure, market, grid) and Korea’s national energy plans and carbon neutrality roadmap.  

Dongjae Oh - Head of Oil and Gas Team (he/him) 

Dongjae Oh researches public financiers’ role and involvement in global oil and gas (O&G) industry. In his role, he tackles both the upstream and midstream stages of the O&G industry, pushing for South Korea’s public financiers to quit relying on fossil fuels and transition to renewable energy.  

Dongjae will be in Dubai for both weeks and is available to discuss topics including, but not limited to: LNG shipbuilding, Asian O&G financing, O&G demand in South Korea, and ongoing O&G projects (e.g., carriers, terminals, pipelines).   

Jinsun Roh - Head of Industry Team (she/her) 

Jinsun Roh works for the decarbonization of the steel and shipping industries as well as the implementation of methane regulations. She engages with South Korean policymakers as well as corporate leaders from leading companies to accelerate industrial green transition. 

Jinsun will be in Dubai for both weeks and is available to discuss topics including, but not limited to: industries’ responsibility in decarbonization, methane reduction in South Korea, and GHG emissions in steel and shipping industries.
